Partition Surprise expects all the data in the partitions are in correct state. You should run manually fsck programs to ensure that. If you don't, there's a chance that Surprise will detect an error an deny the operation, but it is not sure. After you check the partitions, you must unmount them, else Surprise would not be able to touch them.
All the conversion operations are performed in two phases. New filesystem is constructed in free blocks of the old one in the 1st phase -- you can safely interrupt this phase in the client, nothing will be corrupted. Exported filesystem blocks are moved to the final place in 2nd phase. You must NEVER interrupt this phase, else you will certainly lost all your data on that partitions. We recommend to backup all your important data before running Surprise to prevent this -- a computed may switch off if the power supplement is interrupted.
